First STAR WARS Spin-off Titled ROGUE ONE; Episode VIII Gets Release Date

Disney Standalone Spinoff

Gareth Edwards’ upcoming Star Wars spin-off will be called Rogue One and will star the Oscar-nominated actress Felicity Jones.

Rogue One, the first stand-alone feature penned by screenwriter Chris Weitz (Cinderella) is set to begin shooting this summer in London and will hits theaters on December 16, 2016.

There are no story details just yet, but the title might just clear away those reports of the spinoff focusing on a group of pirates/bounty hunters (aka, rogues) who are hired by the Rebels to steal the plans of the first Death Star. A shame they didn’t just title it Top Gun. Lol.

What’s more, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII. The Looper director will take over the franchise from J.J. Abrams, whose Force Awakens opens Dec. 18. Episode VIII will open in theaters May 26th, 2017, exactly 40 years and one day after Star Wars: A New Hope premiered in theaters in 1977.

Both bits of news were revealed during The Walt Disney Company Annual Meeting of Shareholders.
