STAR WARS Spinoff to Be Helmed by Gareth Edwards

Hot on the heels of Godzilla‘s gigantic box office haul, a sequel was quickly given the green light and now filmmaker Gareth Edwards has been enlisted to take the helm of the first Star Wars spinoff film for Disney!

A mystery Star Wars spinoff will feature a screenplay by Gary Whitta (Book of Eli) and is  set to hit theaters December 16, 2016.

Edwards said in the press release:

“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm.”

Little is known about the film thus far and it’s unclear exactly which film Edwards will be directing, but previous rumors have claimed that Lucasfilm is prepping standalone films about Han Solo, Yoda and Boba Fett.

I personally think that’s awesome news for Star Wars, because Edwards brought something fresh and inventive to the blockbuster tentpole genre.

However, the filmmaker is still attached to direct Godzilla 2 and even Godzilla 3, which means he’s on board for a full Godzilla trilogy.

Producer Thomas Tull confirmed that Edwards is still set to direct the sequel:

“The plan has always been for Gareth to direct a different film before we started on another Godzilla, but who knew it would a Star Wars installment? We have a great plan in store for Godzilla fans and I am looking forward to seeing Gareth’s imprint on the Star Wars universe.”

Well, Gareth Edwards could basically retire after those.
