‘Star Wars: TFA’: Official Images of Snoke & Maz Kanata

The Force Awakens CG Characters

Two weeks after Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been released in theaters, Lucasfilm (via EW) has unveiled the first official images of motion capture characters Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) and Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o).

These images, like so many of the other advertising materials, do not spoil anything regarding plot points, but keep in mind that Snoke’s reveal is a great moment in the movie, so if you haven’t seen The Force Awakens yet, you may not want to continue after the jump.

Actually we don’t know who the evil and ancient Supreme Leader of the First Order is just yet, except that he’s the person responsible for luring Kylo Ren to the dark side. Maz is a orange-skinned pirate who is over a thousand years and has ability to sense the Force in others. In the film, she’s providing Rey (Daisy Ridley) with Luke Skywalker’s (Mark Hamill) light saber.

It’s believed that these mysterious CG characters will wind up being the new representatives of the light and dark sides of the force in the Star Wars universe. Therefore, both characters are expected to return in Star Wars: Episode VIII, which starts production in January, directed by Rian Johnson. Check out the images:

The decision to try to fool the audience with the size of Snoke prior to the hologram reveal was an unfortunate choice. He was the only weak visual of the film. Hopefully Snoke will look better when we presumably get to see him in Episode VIII. Maz looks great even in still form. Perhaps she has more to do in VIII. However, I wish both weren’t CG.
