Steven Spielberg On Board for READY PLAYER ONE

Steven Spielberg Sci-Fi Project

Deadline reports that acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg who grew to fame in the ’80s is headed back to the directorial chair to helm the big screen adaptation of the 80’s geekgasm novel Ready Player One by Ernest Cline.

Ready Player One will be Spielberg’s first for Warner Brothers in 14 years. The last movie he made there was A.I. in 2001. And what’s more important to his fans, he hasn’t touched big budget sci-fi since Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and this is prime Spielberg material.

“We are thrilled to welcome Steven back to Warner Bros,” says Greg Silverman, the studio’s President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production. “We had an historic series of collaborations in the 80s and 90s and have wanted to bring him back for years. As for READY PLAYER ONE, we have always felt that Steven was the dream director for this project.”

The story revolves around a teen gamer on an elaborate digital treasure hunt in 2044 to win a multi-billion dollar prize left behind in the will of the creator of his favorite virtual reality game, called “The OASIS”. The trick to beating the game is to figure out how to decipher the clues cloaked beneath layers of ’70s and ’80s ephemera—mainly movies, TV, video games, and music.

“I think what we have to do is drill down to the best version of the movie and then see who wants to be a part of what will surely be a great film,” Silverman added. “What we found with ‘The Lego Movie’ is that when we went and talked to those having the rights, people got excited about being involved.”

The film has been in development since 2010 with X-Men: The Last Stand writer Zak Penn writing the latest draft of the script. Spielberg is just beginning production on the Roald Dahl adaptation The BFG and this is expected to be his next movie immediately thereafter. No word on release date was given. We’ll be following it as it moves into production. Obviously Robopocalypse is delayed…forever…

Check out the plot of the novel:

In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade’s devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world’s digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator’s obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade’s going to survive, he’ll have to win—and confront the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.

Ready Player One is quite fun, you should read it.
