The Winners of the SXSW 2014 Audience Awards

The 2014 SXSW Film Festival jury has handed out their prizes on Tuesday night and today they’ve announced this year’s Audience Awards.

Shawn Christensen‘s feature length film Before I Disappear, a gripping drama about a suicidal man who is asked to babysit his niece for a night, has won the audience award for best narrative feature. Based on his Oscar-winning 2012 short film Curfew,the film stars Christensen alongside 14-year-old Fatima Ptacek, both of whom reprised their roles from the short.The film has also got positive reviews and rich ratings from the film critics.

Before I Disappear - SXSW-2014

Diana Whitten‘s documentary Vessel, about a doctor who gives abortions at sea, won the same award in the Documentary Feature Competition. Whitten’s debut film also won Special Jury Recognition for Political Courage earlier in the week.

The two other top audience awards – the narrative and documentary spotlight prizes went to Diego Luna‘s Cesar Chavez, a biopic about the titular activist (played by Michael Pena) that will open in theaters later this month, and Ben Knight & Travis Rummel‘s DamNation, an environmental documentary about American nation’s changing attitude towards dams and how those structures have affected waterways.

The South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival is screening a total of 133 features and 113 shorts.
