Sylvester Stallone Admits THE EXPENDABLES 3 PG-13 Rating was a Mistake

Ahead of the release of The Expendables 3 on DVD and Blu-ray this week, franchise creator Sylvester Stallone has been discussing the underwhelming box office performance of the movie and the error in making it a PG-13 film.

When CraveOnline asked Sly if a fourth installment would be R-rated he replied:

“Absolutely unequivocally yes. I believe it was a horrible miscalculation on everyone’s part in trying to reach a wider audience, but in doing such, diminish the violence that the audience expects. I’m quite certain it won’t happen again.”

Yeah, it’s weird it took him three movies to realize that….Stallone teased he might not be above bumping one of the main characters off next time out:

“In an R-rated film, it is difficult to believe that none of the heroes die. I personally just believe that the characters become identifiable and their demise could put a dark cloud over an audience exiting the theatre after seeing the film. But that may change in Expendables 4.”

It’d be cool to see Randy Couture‘s character die in the first five seconds of the next film or just end the series or hand it over to more generic action stars.

Sly also revealed that Mel Gibson had been in line to direct the film, before he opted not to do so.

“I wanted Mel Gibson to direct originally because he’s an extraordinary filmmaker. But after several months of discussing it, this ultimately was not to be. But he did say he wanted to be in the movie – and play the villain. My response was a definite ‘YES…. Suit up.’

I’m pretty sure the next one that is rated R and more balls-to-the-wall violent will make people forget about The Expendables 3 , tho. Meanwhile, the home video version will include an Unrated Cut that is five minutes longer than the theatrical version.
