Taika Waititi Would Cast Asian Leads for ‘Akira’ Remake

Taika Waititi’s involvement with live-action Akira remake is still no sure thing, but the “Thor: Ragnarok” director did speak to IGN recently where he confirmed that there have been talks, but refused to reveal whether or not he’d take the project on.

One thing the filmmaker did reveal, however, was how he’d like to cast the film and how he would approach it.

It looks like Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi is in negotiations to direct Akira, the Warner Bros. live-action version of anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo’s 6-volume graphic novel.

The studio has been trying to mount the project of years. Directors once attached to helm the picture include Ruairi Robinson, The Hughes Brothers and Jaume Collet-Serra.

Christopher Nolan May Be Working on ‘Akira’ Trilogy at WB

Genre media site Den of Geek was the first to report on the breaking news that Christopher Nolan might be involved with a live-action Akira trilogy for Warner Bros.

This has yet to be confirmed by official channels, of course, but comes hot on the heels of a report earlier in the month that the Dark Knight director had a mystery Warner Bros. movie scheduled for 2017.

Ruairi Robinson's Concept Teaser

Irish director Ruairi Robinson (The Last Days on Mars) wants to make a monster movie called Leviathan based on this beautifully rendered with an almost photo-realistic gloss sci-fi short.

Robinson’s three-minute animated film Fifty Percent Grey was nominated in 2002 for best short film.

This Akira concept art from fledgling director Ruairi Robinson art looks awesome.There are a couple of character designs for Keneda and Tetsuo with a Pirelli T shirt that make me think of Chris Evans and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a great mix for the film.
