A years-in-the-making period martial-arts drama earned the Taiwanese master his first-ever Cannes Best Director prize. His movies have been previously nominated six times for the Palme d’Or.

Cannes 2015 is officially a wrap and the winners of the 68th Film Festival have been unveiled. The jury led by Joel and Ethan Coen, which also included Sienna Miller, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Guillermo del Toro awarded the Palme d’Or to Jacques Audiard for his émigré drama Dheepan.
