The Divergent sequel, Insurgent opened in first place this weekend with an estimated $54 million, which is $600,000 shy of the first installment’s opening, but it was better than the $49 million that was forecast at this time yesterday.
Disney’s live-action Cinderella racked up a huge $70 million to lead the domestic box office. Overseas, Kenneth Branagh‘s adaptation of the classic fairy tale made $132 million with a stellar $25 million opening in China.

Neill Blomkamp‘s R-rated, original sci-fi thriller Chappie claims No. 1 spot despite its unremarkable $13.3 million gross, which is $5 million short of expectations.
A Vince Vaughn vehicle Unfinished Business performed notably worse and barely made the top ten with $4.8 million in its debut.
While we’re waiting this year’s Oscar nominations, it appears likely Warner Bros. is already making a play for award time next year. Or, to put it another way, anyone hoping to see Ron Howard‘s true story drama soon will be disappointed.
If you thought Taken 3 would be the end of Liam Neeson‘s run as an action star, you thought wrong.
