Good for The Scorch Trials. The Maze Runner sequel edged out Black Mass at the weekend box office with $30.3 million. Warner Bros.’ crime drama took second place with $23.3 million.
The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials was produced with a $61 million budget, so with this lower opening weekend (compared to the $32.5 million that The Maze Runner claimed on this same weekend in 2014), it may have a tougher time earning a profit than the first movie.
Screen Gems’ stalker-thriller The Perfect Guy narrowly beat out M. Night Shyamalan’s horror flick The Visit. Both films exceeded expectations and are going to end up over/under $26 million apiece.
A PG-13 rated thriller The Perfect Guy, starring Michael Ealy and Sanaa Lathan, pulled in $26.7 million ahead of Shyamalan’s micro-budget thriller The Visit close behind with an estimated $25.6 million.
Straight Outta Compton‘s reign at the top of the box office charts is over. Sony/Affirm’s faith-based War Room has conquered the N.W.A. biopic with $9.3 million to lead the modest U.S. box office during a sleepy Labor Day weekend.
The final total of U.S. box office receipts will reportedly be between $87 million and $89 million. Welcome to September.
