Four new films opened in wide release on Thursday night, but they couldn’t make Gone Girl disappear from the top of the box-office charts.

The top new release of the weekend is the PG-13-rated movie Dracula Untold, which got the brief taste of glory.

The Marvel space opera Guardians of the Galaxy ruled with $10.1 million in the slowest box office weekend of the year.

The comic-book movie is the summer’s highest-grossing pic and will likely become the only feature this year to cross the $300-million milestone soon.

Weekend Box Office: GUARDIANS Wins Lackluster Labor Day


Although its wins were not consecutive, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy reached it’s third box office victory and became 2014’s biggest hit domestically.  Guardians is expected to bring in an estimated $21.2 million over the long Labor Day holiday, placing its cume near $279 million and soaring past fellow Marvel hero Captain America: The Winter Soldier which earned the $259.8 million by April release.

Oh man, not even Eva Green’s awesome boobs could save Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. The Sin City sequel gets off to a disastrous start at the box office as it took in just $6.47 million, only 32% of its tracking number.

After ceding top slot to Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for two weeks, Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy moved back up into first place with a fourth weekend take of $17.6 million.

The Michael Bay-produced live-action version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has stellar opening weekend and took in an estimated $65 million at North American theaters.

The heroes in a half shell pushed aside superhero misfits in Guardians of the Galaxy who collected $41.5 million in its second weekend.

Weekend Box Office: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Soars to $94M

The Marvel sci-fi comedy Guardians of the Galaxy has blown away expectations with a $94 million domestic weekend gross. Guardians set a new opening record for August – the previous winner was 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum with $69.3 million. The movie that was a $170 million gamble for Marvel also received the widest release ever for August with more than 4,000 theaters showing the pic.
