Taika Waititi to Direct Marvel’s Thor 3 ‘Ragnarok’

Hemsworth And Waititi

Marvel Studios is reportedly eyeing What We Do in the Shadows helmer Taika Waititi to direct the next Thor sequel, titled Thor: Ragnarok.

Taika Waititi a.k.a. Taika Cohen, the New Zealand-born director whose credits also include the popular HBO comedy series “Flight of the Conchords” as well as “The Inbetweeners,” beat out Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer for the Thor: Ragnarok gig, while Rawson Marshall Thurber (Dodgeball) and Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) were the other finalists.

The New Zealand filmmaker is definitely not an obvious choice to round off the Asgardian trilogy that’s thus far been directed by Kenneth Branagh and Alan Taylor, but we’ve seen a lot of up-and-coming directors lately taking charge of huge blockbuster releases, from Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) to Josh Trank (Fantastic Four) to Jon Watts (Spider-Man).

Maybe rather unfair and a little spiteful, but Marvel likes to get a few more bucks by hiring lesser known folks for less. Elsewhere, Thor: Ragnarok, starring Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston, is scheduled for November 3, 2017.
