‘My mother always tells me to smile and put on a happy face.’ Warner Bros has released the first teaser trailer for Todd Phillips’ villainous tale, and it stars Joaquin Phoenix in the DC Comics’ iconic role.

Zazie Beetz is reportedly playing the love interest, Robert De Niro is playing a talk-show host, and Frances Conroy, Bill Camp, Josh Pais, Shea Whigham, Bryan Callen, Douglas Hodge and Marc Maron have supporting roles.

The film is reportedly inspired by Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. “I used to think that my life was a tragedy,” Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck begins. “But now I realize it’s a comedy.”
