THE GIVER First Trailer with Maryl Streep and Jeff Bridges

The Hollywood adaptation of the Lois Lowry novel The Giver gets its first trailer, full of wise people like Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep that give the guidance accordingly with all the “oh noes” zooming tight shots.

The Giver takes place in the utopian vision of future where the people of Earth no longer feel the terrible emotions of their ancestor — pain, sadness, suffering have been wiped away. However, the only person who can recall what life was like for the new society is called The Receiver (a.k.a. The Giver). Main character Jonas – played by strapping 24-year-old Aussie Brenton Thwaites – is The Receiver’s (Bridges) new apprentice who decides to take drastic action to change things for good.

The film also stars Alexander Skarsgard, Katie Holmes, Cameron Monaghan, and Taylor Swift who appears in the trailer in “a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it” moment.

Directed by Phillip Noyce, The Giver hits theaters on August 15th.

The haunting story of THE GIVER centers on Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. The film is based on Lois Lowry’s beloved young adult novel of the same name, which was the winner the 1994 Newbury Medal and has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.
