Toby Kebbell Revealed a New Origin for THE FANTASTIC FOUR’s Doom

All we knew about the Fox’s Fantastic Four reboot was the list of cast members and the fact that it will be based on the “Ultimate Marvel” alternate universe rather than the Earth-616 version of the team. And that’s pretty much it. Until yesterday, when Toby Kebbell revealed a few details about his take on the iconic Marvel villain Doctor Doom in Josh Trank‘s upcoming reboot movie.

Well, it turns out this incarnation of the Fantastic Four‘s archnemesis will be a computer programmer named Victor Domashev instead of the infamous monarch of fictional Eastern European country Latveria, and he will use the blogger ID “Doom”.

“He’s Victor Domashev, not Victor Von Doom in our story. And I’m sure I’ll be sent to jail for telling you that. The Doom in ours – I’m a programmer. Very anti-social programmer. And on blogging sites I’m ‘Doom’.”

Um, it sounds like Doom is going to have an accent:

“The only thing I can tease you about is what I worked on most was the voice because nobody – even in the cartoons, when I was watching them I was like, ‘So where’s he from?’”

So basically he’s the same character as Jesse Eisenberg in Social Network? However, Kebbell couldn’t stop gushing over his director,

“[Director] Josh [Trank], the whole deal, the lo-fi way he did it, the ultra-real. It was just nice to do that. It was nice to be feeling like we had to come to terms with what was given by this incident.”

Are they kidding with this FF movie?! Trying to force the Fantastic Four story and aesthetics into the lo-fi and “ultra-real” can be read as: Nerd shame. The Fantastic Four isn’t about ‘realism’. They are forcing on us “The Hipster Four” instead. I’m not digging this grounded approach. Just be a little more big cosmic stuff and baroque Kirby technology and that’s it. Victor Von Doom is the iron-fisted ruler, the master of the dark arts and the ego-maniacal despot known as the fearsome Doctor Doom, not a terrible hacker stereotype from the 90’s for god-sake….Not a single dime.

Anyway, The Fantastic Four is scheduled to open on August 7, 2015. Kate Mara stars as Invisible Woman/Sue Storm, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm/The Thing and Miles Teller as the leader of the group Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic. Meh.
