TRON 3 Will Not Be Happening

Damnit Disney! A new report out of THR claims that the studio “has chosen not to move forward” with a third film in the Tron franchise.

Although a sequel to the 2010 TRON: Legacy was reportedly never “officially” greenlit, we’ve heard that it had been in development for several months and both Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde were set to reprise their roles with Legacy director Joseph Kosinski back at the helm.

“We had never greenlit the movie, but it was in development for some time,” said one Disney executive. “Things in the queue got ahead of it and we have such a big slate out in front of it, we started to think, ‘Where does it go?’ And it’s a pretty big investment to make if you are not even sure when you are going to release it.”

But TRON: Legacy made them money by earring over $400 million worldwide on a $170 million budget. It seems like Disney will now have to rely on Marvel and Star Wars movie. They also need the money to remake a bunch of live action versions of animated films that no one really wants to see. Such a disappointment. Maybe the poor performance of Tomorrowland have also played a part in their decision.

Whatever the reason, Disney has elected to pull the plug on it once and for all. Why not to sell the TRON rights to a studio that’s willing to make it?
