Venice 2018: Alfonso Cuaron’s ‘Roma’ Wins Golden Lion

The Golden Lion

Alfonso Cuaron’s deeply personal B&W drama Roma has taken home the Golden Lion at the 2018 Venice Film Festival yesterday, bringing Netflix its first major festival victory.

The jury prize went to Yorgos Lanthimos’ darkly comic period piece The Favourite; Olivia Colman won best actress for her role as England’s Queen Anne.

Best director went to Jacques Audiard for The Sisters Brothers, the witty Western starring Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly. Willem Dafoe took best actor for Julian Schnabel’s Vincent van Gogh biopic At Eternity’s Gate.

Guillermo del Toro headed the jury of the 75th Venice Film Festival.
