Venice: Guillermo del Toro’s ‘The Shape of Water’ Wins the Golden Lion

74th Venice Film Festival

Guillermo del Toro’s romantic fantasy The Shape of Water was awarded the Golden Lion of the 74th Venice Film Festival.

Samuel Maoz’s military drama Foxtrot won the Grand Jury Prize Silver Lion; Xavier Legrand won the Silver Lion for best director, for his debut film Custody; Martin McDonagh took the best screenplay award for his darkly comic revenge tale Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri; And Australian filmmaker Warwick Thornton won the Special Jury Prize for his outback western Sweet Country.

Charlotte Rampling earned Best Actress for her lead role in the Italian drama Hannah; Kamel El Basha won best actor for the courtroom drama The Insult; And Charlie Plummer took the Marcello Mastroianni award for best young actor for his lauded performance in Lean on Pete.

74th Venice Film Festival
