Watch: ‘Desierto’ International Trailer with Gael Garcia Bernal

Jonás Cuarón’s Film

A new international trailer for Jonás Cuarón’s feature directorial debut Desierto popped up online, featuring Donald Trump’s hate-driven speech as we witness Gael García Bernal and his fellow cast members get picked off by Jeffrey Dean Morgan‘s rifle at the U.S. border.

The film reportedly depicts the undocumented Mexican workers in search of a better life whose trek across the border degenerates into a frantic scramble for survival from the gun barrel of a shotgun-toting vigilante. Says Cuaron the younger about his debut:

“I took a trip through the U.S. Southwest where I encountered first-hand stories surrounding immigration and the often cruel and violent story of the migrant journey. I was very moved and immediately felt compelled to outline the film – which happened even before writing ‘Gravity.’ I’ve always been very interested in the concept of films like Spielberg’s ‘Duel,’ Konchalovskiy’s ‘Runaway Train’ and Bresson’s ‘A Man Escapes.’ They are non-stop nail-biting thrillers with very little dialogue, but that at the same time manage to juggle various themes. I was very interested in the drive of these films where the audience connects with the story and character in a very visceral way.”

The film was delayed from its scheduled March 4 premiere date and will open later this year.
