Watch: First Trailer for Gus Van Sant’s ‘The Sea of Trees’

Matthew McConaughey & Ken Watanabe

Here’s the first trailer for Gus Van Sant’s drama The Sea of Trees, starring Matthew McConaughey, Ken Watanabe, and Naomi Watts.

The movie set in the mysterious Aokigahara forest follows a suicidal American (McConaughey) on his way to die, who befriends a Japanese man (Watanabe) lost in the woods, and the two search for a way out.

The Sea of Trees got a harsh reception from the critics at the Cannes Film Festival last year and Lionsgate has yet to set a U.S. release date. The film opens in Japan on April 29th and will be released stateside by Roadside Attractions. Check out the Japanese trailer here below.

“Van Sant has always divided his attention between formal experimentation and saccharin redemption stories, but seldom has he veered so far toward the latter as he does here.” (Slant Magazine)

Gus Van Sant’s Drama

Arthur Brennan (McConaughey) treks into Aokigahara, known as the Sea of Trees, a mysterious dense forest at the base of Japan’s Mount Fuji where people go to contemplate life and death. Having found the perfect place to die, Arthur encounters Takumi Nakamura (Watanabe), a Japanese man who has also lost his way. The two men begin a journey of reflection and survival, which affirms Arthur’s will to live and reconnects him to his love with his wife (Watts).
