Watch: Official U.S. Trailer for Werner Herzog’s ‘Queen of the Desert’
IFC Films has released the official U.S. trailer for Werner Herzog’s new historical epic, Queen of the Desert, starring Nicole Kidman as the real-life British explorer and spy Gertrude Bell who worked with T.E. Lawrence to radically shift the balance of power in the Middle East.
The early-20th-century-set biopic also stars Robert Pattinson, James Franco, and Damian Lewis. Shot on location in Morocco and Jordan, Herzog’s first narrative feature in six years is beautiful to look at, but the narrative lacks an emotional arc and despite the locations it’s not even a particularly attractive looking film.
Nicole Kidman and director Werner Herzog bring to life the extraordinary true story of a trailblazing woman who found freedom in the faraway world of the Middle East. Gertrude Bell (Kidman) chafes against the stifling rigidity of life in turn-of-the-century England, leaving it behind for a chance to travel to Tehran. So begins her lifelong adventure across the Arab world, a journey marked by danger, a passionate affair with a British officer (James Franco), and an encounter with the legendary T.E. Lawrence (Robert Pattinson). Stunningly shot on location in Morocco and Jordan, Queen of the Desert reveals how an ahead-of-her-time woman shaped the course of history.
Queen of the Desert opens in select U.S. theaters and on VOD starting April 14, over two years after its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival.
