Weekend Box Office: AGE OF ULTRON Scores Second U.S. Debut of All Time

Weekend Estimates

Marvel and Disney’s Avengers: Age of Ultron scored the second-best debut weekend of all time, earning a whopping $187.66 million in its domestic debut.

The Joss Whedon film snagged the second-biggest single day on Friday (including Thursday previews) with $84.5 million and has a mammoth $627 million globally in 12 days of release.

With so much sporting events taking place on Saturday, the movie took a significant tumble and grossed less than The Avengers did. Avengers: Ultron will not beat the record-setting opening weekend box office of its predecessor, yet it still earned an “A” CinemaScore so Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ future seems secure.

This weekends remaining top five included Blake Lively-starrer The Age of Adaline, Universal’s Furious 7, Kevin James’ comedy sequel Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 and DreamWorks Animation’s Home.

Alex Garland’s sci-fi thriller Ex Machina, starring Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson and Alicia Vikander, dipped 58% as it brought in $2.23 million from 1,279 theaters. Enjoy the Rentrak top-ten:

Next week sees the debut of Sofia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon feature Hot Pursuit, but the big question now is whether Ultron will hurt Mad Max‘s chances at the box office two weeks from today.
