Weekend Box Office: ‘Angry Birds’ Tops ‘Captain America’

Weekend Box Office

Columbia Pictures and Rovio Animation‘s The Angry Birds Movie opened this weekend in North America with a $39 million, more than enough to take the top spot from Captain America: Civil War, which earned $33.1 million in its third weekend to bring its domestic total to $347.4 million and crossed the $1 billion mark on Friday to become the 25th film to hit the milestone.

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising debuted in third place with $21.8 million, a drop of 56 percent from the 2014 original. The critically-acclaimed buddy comedy The Nice Guys finished at fourth with just $11.3 million, below expectations of $17 million. It probably didn’t get as well reviews from moviegoers because it had quite a bit of nudity and isn’t politically correct at all. I guess Neighbors 2 will do better but not The Nice Guys.

Rounding out the top five was Disney’s The Jungle Book, which added $11 million its sixth weekend to bring its domestic total to $327.5 million. Here’s this weekend’s top ten at the box office:

May 20-22 Weekend

The following Memorial Day weekend will boast two solid wide release newcomers with Alice Through the Looking Glass and X-Men: Apocalypse each expected to perform well, so stay tuned.
