Weekend Box Office: ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ Debuts with $76 Million
Disney and Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp has taken the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office in its opening weekend, with an estimated $76 million in ticket sales.
The stature-shifting superhero sequel easily surpassed the $57 million debut of the 2015 original in North America. Directed once again by Peyton Reed, Ant-Man 2 stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Peña, Bobby Cannavale, Judy Greer, Abby Ryder Fortson, Tip “T.I.” Harris, David Dastmalchian, Hannah John-Kamen, Walton Goggins, Randall Park, with Michelle Pfeiffer, Laurence Fishburne, and Michael Douglas. CinemaScore gave it an A-.
The weekend’s other new wide release was Universal and Blumhouse’s dystopian thriller The First Purge, which opened in fourth place domestically with $17.2 million for a five-day debut of $31.1 million. The fourth installment of the Purge franchise stars Y’Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez and Marisa Tomei. The Staten Island-set horror prequel is directed by Gerard McMurray and stars Y’Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez and Marisa Tomei.
