Weekend Box Office: ‘Cars 3’ Zooms Past ‘Wonder Woman’ with $53.5M

Pixar and Disney’s threequel Cars 3 dominated the road at the domestic box office over the weekend with an estimated $53.5 million from 4,256 theaters.

Directed by Brian Fee, Cars 3 ensemble voice cast includes Owen Wilson, Cristela Alonzo, Armie Hammer, Larry the Cable Guy, Bonnie Hunt, Nathan Fillion, Kerry Washington, and Lea DeLaria. The film received an A CinemaScore.

Warner’s Wonder Woman had box-office sales of $40.7 million in its third weekend. The latest film in the DC Extended Universe now has a domestic total of $274.6 million, with worldwide tally of $571.8 million.

The Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez on Me (Lionsgate/Summit), directed by Benny Boom, debuted in third place with an estimated $27 million from 2,471 locations. The R-rated 2Pac — which was criticized on Twitter by Jada Pinkett Smith for its inaccuracies — received an A- on CinemaScore.

The top 5 was rounded out by Tom Cruise’s The Mummy (Universal) with $13.9 million and newcomer 47 Meters Down (Entertainment Studios) with $11.5 million. Directed by Johannes Roberts and starring Mandy Moore and Claire Holt, the film garnered a C.

Also in the top 10 is Sony’s Rough Night, which comes in seventh with an estimated $8 million from 3,162 locations. The raunchy, fem-centric R-rated comedy stars Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, Ilana Glazer, Zoë Kravitz, and Paul W. Downs. Receiving a C+ CinemaScore, the project cost about $20 million to make.
