Weekend Box Office: DIVERGENT Debuted with $56 Million

Teen sci-fi franchise Divergent debuted with an estimated $56 million at the box office, one of the year’s biggest openings, but one shy of cheerier expectations.

That’s less than Lionsgate’s original Twilight, which opened with $69.6 million in Nov. 2008, and its The Hunger Games, which started with a massive $152.5 million in March 2012.

As for fellow new releases, Disney’s Muppets Most Wanted trails far behind with $16.5 million, while God’s Not Dead pulled off a surprise top five finish and earned over $8.5 million from just 780 locations. This year’s Christian streak continues with the debut of Noah next weekend.

Last weekend’s runner-up, the animated Mr. Peabody and Sherman, slid to third place in its third week of release with $11.7 million.
