Weekend Box Office: FANTASTIC FOUR Opens Behind ROGUE NATION

August 09 Estimates

Fox‘s Fantastic Four ended up falling behind Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation for the weekend with $26.2 million, along with a nasty “C-” CinemaScore.

The previous Fantastic Four film finished first with a $56.1-million opening weekend in 2005. Too bad about Fantastic Four. Unless the rights go back to Marvel, and they start getting toys and comics again the F4 are dead.

The fifth film in the M:I franchise was in second place on Friday with $8.2 million but the end result was a first place with $29.4 million and a solid 47% hold in its second weekend.

The suspense thriller The Gift starring Jason Bateman was the big winner of the weekend, taking in $12 million from 1,648 locations.

In fourth place, the comedy remake Vacation added $9.1 million in its sophomore frame.

Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man rounded out the top five with $7.8 million (down 39%) as it brought its domestic gross to $147.4 million.

Another new release, the Meryl Streep-led musical dramedy Ricki and the Flash scored only $7 million from 1,603 theaters and opened in seventh place this weekend. Here’s the top-ten list based on studio estimates:

Weekend Box Office

The NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton is the favorite for first place next weekend, but I’m curious to see if The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is going to crash. It’s trailers have been pretty messy.
