Weekend Box Office: ‘Incredibles 2’ Smashes Animation Record with $180M
The Disney-Pixar Incredibles sequel earned an estimated $180 million from 4,410 theaters at the domestic box office, setting the record for highest animation debut of all time – Finding Dory was the previous champion with $135 million.
Writer-director Brad Bird’s film about a lovable family of superheroes features the voices of Holly Hunter, Craig T. Nelson, Sarah Vowell, Huck Milner, Samuel L. Jackson, Brad Bird, Bob Odenkirk, Catherine Keener, Jonathan Banks, Sophia Bush, and Isabella Rossellini. The film earned an A+ Cinemascore.
Taking second place this weekend is Warner Bros. Pictures‘ Ocean’s 8 with $19.6 million.
Newcomer Tag (New Line) opened at #3 with a decent $14.6 million. Directed by Jeff Tomsic, the adult-oriented comedy stars Ed Helms, Jake Johnson, Annabelle Wallis, Hannibal Buress, Isla Fisher, Rashida Jones, Leslie Bibb, Jon Hamm, and Jeremy Renner. Tag garnered mixed reviews and a B+ Cinemascore.
Sony’s remake of Superfly debuted in 7th place with $6.3 million. The music-centric movie stars Trevor Jackson, Jason Mitchell, Michael Kenneth Williams, Lex Scott Davis and Jennifer Morrison. The film is directed by music video helmer Director X. Reviews were mixed, and moviegoers gave it a B+ Cinemascore, too.
