Weekend Box Office: ‘It’ Narrowly Beats ‘American Made,’ ‘Kingsman 2’

According to Sunday estimates, Warner Bros. and New Line’s It has returned to narrowly beat out American Made and Kingsman 2 in a close three-way contest this weekend.

Some rival studios reportedly show It and Fox’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle tying with $17 million each, and Universal’s American Made coming in slightly behind, meaning this one likely won’t be settled until Monday morning.

After dropping down to second last week, the Stephen King adaptation regained the top spot with an estimated $17.3 million, to bring its domestic total to $291.1 million after four weekends.

Opening in second is Doug Liman‘s latest Tom Cruise vehicle American Made with estimated $17.01 million. The film received a B+ CinemaScore from audiences.

With the $17 million second weekend, The Golden Circle has now earned around $130 million internationally and $66 million domestically.

Warner Bros.’ The LEGO Ninjago Movie, looks to land in fourth with $12 million and has grossed $35.6 million after two weeks domestically.

Rounding out the top five is newcomer Flatliners (Sony/Cross Creek) with a paltry $6.7 million take. Directed by Niels Arden Oplev, a sequel to the 1990 hit of the same name stars Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemons. The pic received a B- CinemaScore.

Fox Searchlight’s Battle of the Sexes, starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell, expanded to 1,213 where it’s earning $3.4 million, barely beating out American Assassin in its third frame.

Christopher B. Stokes’ psychological thriller Till Death Do Us Part (Novus Content/Footage Films) managed to breakthrough into the top 10. Starring Taye Diggs, Annie Ilonzeh and Stephen Bishop, the film finished in ninth with $1.5 million from 562 locations.

UPDATE: According to Variety, final weekend numbers released on Monday evening from comScore showed the second weekend of the Kingsman sequel taking in $16.93 million for the Friday-Sunday frame. New Line’s It reportedly tallied $16.9 million in its fourth weekend, topping American Made’s $16.8 million opening weekend gross.
