Weekend Box Office: ‘Jason Bourne’ Wins with $60 Million

Universal Pictures‘ Jason Bourne, starring Matt Damon, opened strong with an estimated $60 million from 4,026 theaters, one of the few franchise titles to come in ahead of its predecessor.

The fifth theatrical adaptation of Robert Ludlum’s book series earned the second-highest opening haul for a Bourne title, coming in behind the $69 million bow of The Bourne Ultimatum, and received an A- CinemaScore from audiences.

Paramount Pictures’ Star Trek Beyond – the third in the rebooted lineage – dropped a spot to second place, almost 60% in its second week of box office earnings. Made for $185 million, the second lowest-grossing title in franchise history managed to bring its total to $105 million domestically.

STX Entertainment‘s raunchy comedy Bad Moms, starring Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn, opened with an impressive $23 million and that was enough for a third-place finish.

Rounding out the top five are llumination Entertainment’s The Secret Life of Pets and New Line’s Lights Out, which pull in an estimated $18.2 and $10.8 million, respectively. Elsewhere, James Franco‘s thriller Nerve debuted at number eight with just $9 million. Take a look at the box office estimates below.
