Weekend Box Office: ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ Kicks the Competition

Kung Fu Panda 3

The first animated U.S.-Chinese co-production, Kung Fu Panda 3 easily topped the North American box office this weekend with $41 million, according to Sunday’s estimates. Though slightly less than expected, the third installment in the series from DreamWorks Animation earned the third best January opening of all time to easily overtake other new releases including The Finest Hours and Fifty Shades of Black, as well as the last week’s winner, The Revenant and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which banked another $10.8 million and took its domestic total to an approximate $895.4 million.

Panda will have the market on the family audience for several weeks to come because parents will not be taking their children to see Deadpool. It boasts an A Cinemascore grade from moviegoers. The $120-$140 million animated sequel also opened with a whopping $57.9 million in China.

Elsewhere, the troubled Natalie Portman-starring western Jane Got a Gun only opened to $803,000 in 1,210 locations and took a very distant 17th place this weekend. The movie should have never been made after all of that problems.
