Weekend Box Office: ‘Ninja Turtles 2’ Tops ‘X-Men’ with $35.2M

Weekend Box Office

Paramount Pictures’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows tops X-Men: Apocalypse at slow box office weekend. The pizza-munching reptiles earned $35.2 million in its debut weekend, which is about a 40% drop from the first Ninja Turtles reboot. The 2016 movie seems somewhat artificial. You could connect with the storyline better in the 2014 movie.

Fox’s Apocalypse fell to 2nd place in its second weekend, declining 66% in ticket sales to earn $116.5 million since debuting over Memorial Day. That is a massive drop for X-Men. But the latest installment of the franchise impressed in its China debut with $59 million, the second-best showing for a Fox title after the rerelease of Titanic. However, Fox can and should do better.

New Line and MGM’s Me Before You, the romance headlined by Game of ThronesEmilia Clarke and The Hunger GamesSam Claflin, had a strong third-place debut with $18.3 million. The modestly budgeted tearjerker received an A CinemaScore and cost just $20 million to make.

Disney’s Alice Through the Looking Glass dropped to the fourth spot and 60.2% in ticket sales since opening Memorial Day weekend. The sequel to 2010’s Alice in Wonderland earned $10.7 million ($50.8 million total).

Rounding out the top five was Sony’s animated The Angry Birds Movie with $9.8 million for a three-week total of $86.7 million. The PG-rated screen adaptation of the popular game app cost about $73 million to make before marketing.

Meanwhile, the Lonely Island mockumentary Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping has stopped before it could ever begin. The Universal satire earned just $4.6 million to take eighth place. Take a look at this weekend’s top ten estimates.
