Weekend Box Office: ‘Ocean’s 8’ Sets Franchise Record with $41.5M Opening

Warner Bros./Village Roadshow’s female-led heist movie Ocean’s 8 opened over the weekend to a series-best $41.5 million. Directed by Gary Ross, and starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna and more, the spinoff of the Ocean’s trilogy received a B-plus CinemaScore.

Disney/LucasFilm’s Solo: A Star Wars Story fell to the #2 slot with $15.2 million for a domestic total of $176.1 million.

Fox’s superhero sequel Deadpool 2 came in No. 3 with $13.7 million in its fourth weekend.

Meanwhile, A24’s R-rated horror movie Hereditary also got a box office boost. Written and directed by Ari Aster, the film starring Toni Collette debuts at #4 with $13.0 million. Early audiences responded differently, giving it a D+ CinemaScore.

Rounding out the top 5 is Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War with $6.8 million, bringing its domestic total to $654.7 million after seven weeks in theaters.

The weekend’s other major new release, the Global Road action thriller Hotel Artemis, bombed with $3.2 million, good for the No. 8 spot.
