Weekend Box Office: ‘Office Christmas Party’ Narrowly Edged Out by ‘Moana’

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana topped a relatively quiet weekend with $18.8 million in its third consecutive No. 1 spot.

The animated movie had serious competition from newcomer Office Christmas Party which came a close second with $17.5 million. Paramount’s R-rated comedy starring T.J. Miller and Jennifer Aniston was made for $45 million and received a B CinemaScore from audiences.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them took third place with $10.8 million for a total of $199.3 million domestic and a further $480.7 million overseas.

Paramount’s sci-fi drama Arrival earned $5.6 million in fourth, pushing its gross to $81.4 million. Marvel’s Doctor Strange rounded out the top five in North America, nabbing $4.6 million to bring its total to $222.3 million.

Ryan Gosling And Emma Stone

In limited release, Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, earned a stunning $855,000 from five theaters in New York and Los Angeles. That’s the second-biggest per-theater total after Grand Budapest Hotel ($202,792, four theaters). The musical has a serious chance at rackin’ up some awards.
