Weekend Box Office: ‘Perfect Guy’ Tops Shyamalan’s ‘Visit’

Screen Gems’ stalker-thriller The Perfect Guy narrowly beat out M. Night Shyamalan’s horror flick The Visit. Both films exceeded expectations and are going to end up over/under $26 million apiece.

A PG-13 rated thriller The Perfect Guy, starring Michael Ealy and Sanaa Lathan, pulled in $26.7 million ahead of Shyamalan’s micro-budget thriller The Visit close behind with an estimated $25.6 million.

Yeah, Shyamalan is back to the shock and chills genre that made him famous with The Sixth Sense, and yeah, The Perfect Guy is now the third film in a row with a predominantly African American leading cast to take No. 1, capping a five weekend winning streak started by Straight Outta Compton and followed by War Room, which earned another $7.4 million this weekend, placing third.

A Walk in the Woods, starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte, took fourth with $4.7 million in its second weekend for a nearly $20 million domestic total.

Tom Cruise and Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation rounded out the top five with an estimated $4.1 million, narrowly beating Straight Outta Compton and pushing its North American cume north of $188 million, while Transporter Refueled dropped a hefty 63% for a second weekend total of $2.7 million.

Elsewhere 90 Minutes in Heaven, a new faith-based film starring Hayden Christensen and Kate Bosworth, opened to only $2.2 million from 838 theaters to come in No. 9. Here’s the chart, courtesy of Box Office Mojo.
