Weekend Box Office: ‘Power Rangers’ Morphs Strong But ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Remains On Top
Lionsgate’s rebooted Power Rangers was the top new release, but Disney‘s Beauty and the Beast once again reigned supreme at the domestic box office with an estimated $88.3 million.
The smash hit film declined just 49% from its opening weekend, which was the seventh-best ever and you can bet the studio is open to spinoffs and prequels based on the property.
Power Rangers took #2 with a very solid $40.5 million. The Dean Israelite-directed PG-13 reboot of the campy television show cost a reported $100 million to produce. Starring Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler, Naomi Scott, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Elizabeth Banks, Bryan Cranston, and Bill Hader, the film received an A CinemaScore from audiences.
Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island was headed for third place with $14.4 million.
Sony-Skydance’s sci-fi thriller Life debuted at #4, which wasn’t catastrophic, but failed to gain much traction with a domestic estimate of $12.6 million. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson and Ryan Reynolds, the Daniel Espinosa-directed film received just a C+ CinemaScore from audiences. The movie is looking like it’ll struggle to hit the reported $58 million budget in box office earnings.
Down two places, the James Mangold-directed Logan (20th Century Fox) rounded out the top five with $10.1 million (cume now $201.4 million).
The critically derided CHiPs (Warner Bros.) debuted with just $7.6 million for seventh place. The third of this week’s major new releases, starring Dax Shepard and Michael Pena, was made for $25 million and received a B- CinemaScore.
