Weekend Box Office: ROGUE NATION Was #1 Movie with $56 Million Opening

July 31 August 02

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation easily claimed victory at the weekend box office with a strong, $56 million showing.

The movie received a big push for its IMAX showings with Paramount previewing the first five minutes of the movie in IMAX in front of Terminator Genisys.

I’m glad Tom Cruise is back better than ever, but the fifth installment essentially was a movie made around product placement that didn’t have a plot. Nevermind, Cruise is already teasing a sixth installment filming as early as next summer.

New Line and Warner Bros. Pictures’ remake/sequel Vacation, which opened on Wednesday to $3.8 million, earned a disappointing $14.9 million this weekend.

Ant-Man dropped 49% in its third weekend to third place with $12.6 million, while Minions dropped one spot to fourth with $12.2 million (down 47%).

Adam Sandler‘s Pixels completes the top five with a 55% drop this weekend for $7.5 million. Check out this weekend’s top-ten list based on studio estimates:

Next weekend Fox will deliver what appears to be a troubled Fantastic Four so it will be interesting to see how M:I 5 holds over with the superheroes.
