Weekend Box Office: ‘Rogue One’ Dominates with $155 Million Debut

Disney’s stand-alone film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opened to a massive $155 million, scoring the second-largest December opening ever behind last year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Internationally, the film debuted No. 1 everywhere with $135.5 million. The movie has an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and nabbed an A CinemaScore.

Elsewhere, Will Smith‘s critically savaged drama Collateral Beauty performed horribly with $7 million from 3,028 theaters in a career worst for the actor.

Disney’s Moana dropped a spot to second place, picking up $11.6 million and pushing its stateside gross to $161.8 million.

Paramount’s Office Christmas Party came in third, earning $8.4 million and bringing the R-rated comedy’s total to $31.5 million after two weeks of release.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them rounded out the top five, picking up $5 million for a domestic total of $207.6 million.

Meanwhile, Damien Chazelle’s La La Land launched into the top ten this weekend, earning $4 million from just 200 screens.

In limited release, Denzel Washington‘s Fences made $128,000 from four theaters. Starring Washington and Viola Davis, the film is slated for a wide release next weekend.

Universal and Legendary’s period monster epic The Great Wall opened in China to $67.4 million. The high-profile China-U.S. production stars Matt Damon and will open in North America February 17, 2017.
