Weekend Box Office: ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Opens Big Domestically

Sony and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Homecoming is looking at a $117 million opening from 4,348 theaters at the North American box office over the weekend.

The critically acclaimed tentpole opened to a stunning $50.5 million on Friday and will be the third-best domestic opening of the year to date behind Beauty and the Beast ($174.8 million) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($146.5 million).

Directed by Jon Watts, Homecoming stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya Coleman, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr. The film cost $175 million to produce. In short, it was just what you need from a superhero movie: good fun.

In second place was Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me 3 with $34 million, for a total of $149.2 million.

Third place went to Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver. Sony’s second summer win has a $56.8 million domestic total after twelve days.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ Wonder Woman placed No. 4 in its sixth weekend with $10.1 million and Michael Bay’s Transformers: The Last Knight (Paramount Pictures) rounded out the top five with $6.3 million in its third weekend.

Michael Showalter’s The Big Sick (Amazon Studios and Lionsgate) continued to impress, moving into the top ten as it expanded into 326 theaters and has earned $6.9 million since opening in limited release on June 23.

10. The Beguiled — $2 million ($7.4 mil.)

Next weekend War for the Planet of the Apes puts simians against humans.
