Weekend Box Office: ‘Straight Outta Compton’ had a Massive Opening

August 14-16 Estimates

Universal Pictures’ Straight Outta Compton had a massive opening with an estimated $56 million this weekend. Universal just can’t put a foot wrong lately. Their movies have grossed the company over $2 billion just in North America.

The R-rated biopic about the late ’80s and early ’90s hip-hop group N.W.A. overshadowed other rap movies like Eminem’s 8 Mile, which bowed to $51.2 million in 2002, and Notorious, the story of Notorious B.I.G., which opened to $20.5 million in 2009.

Compton‘s success also overshadowed the other new release, Warner Bros.‘ period spy flick The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Budgeted at a reported $75 million-plus, the movie arrived in third place, behind Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, bringing in an etiolated $13.5 million from 3,638 theaters.

Henry Cavill apparently isn’t that well known besides being Superman and Arnie Hammer (Lone Ranger) needs to reconsider his movies choices.

20th Century Fox’s latest adaptation of Marvel’s Fantastic Four brought in $8 million, finishing fourth at the box office. The film took a massive plunge in its second weekend, dipping 69% from its already disastrous opening weekend last week.

STX Entertainment’s psychological thriller The Gift rounded out the top five, earning $6.5 million this weekend, down 45%, and pushing its domestic total to $23.6 million. Check out the top-ten list based on studio estimates:

Weekend Box Office

Next weekend sees the release of Hitman: Agent 47 from Fox, American Ultra from Lionsgate., and Sinister 2 from Focus Features, so I think none of these titles are looking like legitimate competition for Compton to take top spot again.
