Weekend Box Office: ‘The Conjuring 2’ Tops with $40.4M

James Wan’s Horror Sequel

James Wan’s horror sequel The Conjuring 2 easily beat big-budget video game adaptation Warcraft and Now You See Me 2 at the North American box office this weekend, earning an estimated $40.3 million.

Great numbers for The Conjuring 2. Vera Farmiga is always interesting.

Duncan Jones‘ human-versus-orcs epic, Warcraft, which earned a huge opening weekend in China ( $156 million), opened domestically in second place with just over $24 million for the weekend. A film with a $160 million budget has earned over $300 million globally. No doubt Warcraft will have to rely a lot of international sales for that franchise to continue.

Lionsgate sequel Now You See Me 2 conjured up a third spot, earning 24.4 million compared to $29 million for its predecessor. I’ve heard it’s not as good as the first one and not as fun either.

Elsewhere, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows ($14.8 million) and X-Men: Apocalypse ($10 million) rounded out the weekend’s top five. TMNT2 is definitely in trouble. Here’s a look at this weekend’s top ten estimates.

1.   The Conjuring 2 – $40.4M in Week 1 ($40.4M total)
