Weekend Box Office: ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Still Rules

Disney-Marvel’s Blockbuster

Disney-Marvel’s big-budget action fantasy Thor: Ragnarok continues to reign supreme at the North American box office with $56.6 million in its second weekend.

Newcomers Daddy’s Home 2 (Paramount Pictures) and Murder on the Orient Express (20th Century Fox) are also among the top five, but Taika Waititi‘s colorful blockbuster retained the number one spot at the box office.

Critical approval is often not necessary for box office success, and despite dreadful reviews the sequel to the 2015 comedy debuted at No. 2 with $30 million, edging out the star-studded murder mystery, which placed third with $28.2 million.

Directed by Sean Anders and starring Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, John Lithgow, and Mel Gibson, Daddy’s Home 2 scored an A- CinemaScore.

Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the adaptation of Agatha Christie’s novel got a B on CinemaScore. Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penelope Cruz, Willem Dafoe and Daisy Ridley also star.

In fourth place is another comedy sequel, STX’s A Bad Moms Christmas, which added $11.5 million to its earnings.

Rounding out the top five was Lionsgate’s horror reboot Jigsaw, which earned an estimated $3.4 million over the weekend.
