Weekend Box Office: ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ Tops ‘Spider-Man’ with $56.5M

20th Century Fox‘s War for the Planet of the Apes brought in an estimated $56.5 million from 4,022 locations at the domestic box office this weekend. That was enough to take down Spider-Man: Homecoming at the North American box office.

Matt Reeves‘ second, super grim entry in the series stars Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, Amiah Miller, Karin Konoval, Judy Greer and Terry Notary. Made for about $150 million, it received an A- CinemaScore from audiences.

Internationally, Sony and Marvel Studios’ rebooted Spider-Man scored $72.3 million from 64 territories for a foreign cume of $261.1 million, and is the winner once again.

The weekend’s other new offering, Broad Green’s horror film Wish Upon, got lost in its debut to come in No. 7 with $5.5 million from 2,250 theaters. The YA fantasy/horror pic stars Joey King, Ryan Phillippe and Elisabeth Rohm. Wish Upon received a dismal C grade from audiences on CinemaScore.
