Weekend Box Office: ‘Zootopia’ Fends off Two Debut Movies

Disney's Animated Hit

Disney’s animated hit Zootopia continues its dominating box office run, as it fends off newcomers Divegent: Allegiant and Miracles from Heaven to repeat a top spot for the third straight weekend in a row with $38 million.

Lionsgate’s The Divergent Series: Allegiant underperformed in its debut, coming in second place with just over $29 million. It is well under the debuts of 2014’s Divergent ($54 million) and last year’s Insurgent ($52 million). The studios want so badly for Divergent series to be the next Hunger Games, but sounds like Allegiant is just another bomb.

Sony Pictures‘ Christian-themed Miracles from Heaven, starring Jennifer Garner, had a solid opening weekend with $15 million for an overall bronze medal.

In its second weekend, the sci-fi thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane landed in fourth with $12.5 million with almost 50% drop from the previous week.

Rounding out the top five is popular comic book adaptation Deadpool, earning another $8 million for a new $340 million domestic cume, officially surpassing Guardians of the Galaxy to become second highest grossing superhero origin movie of all time.
