Weekend Box Office: NEIGHBORS No.1 Over SPIDER-MAN

The R-rated frathouse comedy Neighbors easily bested The Amazing Spider-Man 2 at the box office. Seth Rogen and Zac Efron‘s raunchy comedy wound up with $51 million for the three-day weekend, making it the biggest non-animated opening for both actors.

The web-slinger got knocked down a spot, dropping 59% as it settled into second place with $37.2 million in North America. International returns have been better for Sony’s high-stakes release, grossing $403 million so far.

This weekend’s other new movies have included the likes of the PG-rated comedy Mom’s Night Out, which made 4.2 million, and the animated film Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return, which made 3.7 million.

Third place went to women’s comedy The Other Woman, which dropped only 35%, showing how hungry audiences are for comedies.

Sony’s Heaven is Real dropped only 18.6% from last weekend holding great and heading to something over $100 million.

Marvel Studios’ Captain America: The Winter Soldier rounded out the top five earning $5.6 million and grossed $245 million domestically since opening in early April.

Next weekend brings us Gareth Edward‘s remake of Godzilla, which is expected to bring in about $75 million.
