Willem Dafoe will Provide the Voice of Ryuk in Netflix’s ‘Death Note’

Ryuk The Shinigami

According to Mashable, the Oscar-nominee Willem Dafoe (Justice League) has just signed on to voice the death guard character Ryuk the Shinigami in the U.S. adaptation of the famous Japanese comic, Death Note.

Based on the uber-popular manga, written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, the Adam Wingard‘s Netflix-bound Death Note movie has been in the works for years, but really started to pick up last year when Wingard and Nat Wolff signed on.

Wolff stars as protagonist Light, “an ace student with great prospects” who comes across a supernatural notebook that sets him on his murderous path. Dafoe’s Ryuk is the creature in the series who brings the titular book to the human world. It’d be awesome if he did motion capture.

The cast mainly includes Caucasian actors such as Keith Stanfield as intrepid detective “L”; Margaret Qualley as Mia Sutton; Paul Nakauchi as Watari; and Shea Whigham as Light’s father and police officer, James Turner.

The upcoming live-action film is slated for a 2017 release on Netflix.
